Early Morning Screwdriver

Subtitle: Why I am drinking at 4 a.m.

This weekend was absolutely gorgeous--sunny with clear skies, pleasant temperatures, lots of little woodland critters scampering around, and flowers blooming in our backyard. And what did I spend my weekend doing?

Writing an ARRA supplement application that I discovered I would be writing 6 days ago and is due in 4 days. For a grant that isn't mine, that I read for the first time 5 days ago, and is on a subfield I have never worked in.

This supplement is the reason I'm still awake and working. Not so much because I won't be able to meet the deadline otherwise, but because I have a hard time going to sleep when my brain insists on constantly rewriting and rearranging parts of the application. After all, why lie in bed working on the application in my head when I can actually make some progress?

So when I went to get a glass of orange juice ten minutes ago, I felt perfectly justified in adding a little vodka to it. Grey Goose...good stuff. I'm guessing it's not going to help my grant-writing skills, but it's certainly improving my mood.

Maybe I'll cancel my morning meetings....

Work does not keep me up at night as much these days as it used to, but when for one reason or another I stay up at night (typically because I can't sleep, but not because I am worried about work), and start working to kill time, I end up getting a lot of stuff done... Nightly productivity greatly exceeds that during the morning, and I wonder whether it is because of the fewer distractions...

I think I'm about to add a little Gin to my OJ... It's going to be one of THOSE weeks.

see, this is completely the way to do it :)

Good luck with the sleeping after finishing part of the rearranging.

Totally appropriate! It's impossible to write a grant without ethanol in your bloodstream I find!

Sounds like a stellar plan! Too bad that it's unacceptable to put whisky in your tea at 10.20 am while in the office...

HG--Heh...I had a feeling you might approve! :-)

Massimo--My nightly productivity greatly exceeds that of the day also, if productivity is defined by quantity. Sometimes the quality of work done in the middle of the night is not quite up to standards by the light of the day.

Science Bear--Gin and OJ? Never tried that. Hope your week isn't going to be as bad as expected!

Chall--I ended up not sleeping at all and just going to work after that. Got lots done during the night, but the day after really, really sucked.

Tig--I've never actually tried grant-writing while under the influence. We'll see if this one gets funded. If it does, this might have to become a regular habit! :-)

Cath--Says who??? There's a reason I keep a bottle of rum in my desk drawer!

Vodka is to grant writing as beer is to grading =)

Albatross--Let's face it...alcohol makes every tedious task seem better. That is, until you wake up the next day and realize you have to redo most of it! :-)
